Musings From the Genny: Week of July 28, 2025

Newcomers often ask, "Who is Genny?" This always brings a smile to our faces. It's a bit like those beloved friends, family, or even pets we've given affectionate nicknames to over the years. Those nicknames become a testament to our closeness and simply endure. Over a decade ago, our general store started being referred to as "The Genny." And like a favorite, comfy blanket, the name just wrapped around us. We never take it for granted that we have to continue to be what our community needs to be The Genny.

This organic evolution of identity extends beyond our name, subtly woven into the very fabric of our physical space. It's fascinating how even our trademark heart door latch, gracing the front door of our Craftsbury establishment, seemed to appear almost by magic. The story behind it is a beautiful reflection of the spirit of our community. Our dear friend Richie, perhaps our favorite Jersey transplant,  had taken our original latch home to his shop for a necessary repair, paid for with a slice of pizza. When he returned it, instead of the familiar, utilitarian hardware, this exquisite, vibrant red heart was what now adorned our entrance.

From that day forward, every guest, every neighbor, every curious visitor to our store has had the delightful experience of pressing down on this charming heart to open our door. Over the years, that little latch has become as much a part of our identity as The Genny itself. It’s a small, daily reminder of the care and the warmth we hope to provide in both Albany and Craftsbury. It speaks to the serendipitous moments and the deep connections that have shaped our story, embodying the enduring spirit of our general store and the community it proudly serves.
